Novell Announces Executive Changes
Provo, Utah -- April 3, 1992 -- Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL) announced the
appointment of Jan Newman, formerly vice president software development,
as executive vice president and general manager of the NetWare Systems
Group; and that John Edwards, formerly vice president marketing NetWare
Systems Group, has been named executive vice president and general manager
of the Desktop Systems Group.
The announcement follows the retirement for personal reasons of James C.
Bills, as head of the NetWare Systems Group, and the unrelated decision by
Richard H. Williams, to retire as head of the Desktop Systems Group.
Bills' retirement is effective May 1, but he will continue as a consultant
to Novell. Williams will remain with the company through the end of May
to complete the integration of the recently merged Digital Research within
Novell as its Desktop Systems Group.
"Although we are disappointed that Bills and Williams have decided to
leave, our steps last year to create business units around Novell's three
main product groups allow for the smooth transition of authority to the
new executives," said Raymond J. Noorda president and chief executive
officer of Novell.
"Over the last four years John Edwards and Jan Newman have proven
themselves as exceptional leaders within Novell," added Noorda. "Their
experience in working closely with Novell's employees and customers, gives
us every confidence they have the vision necessary to lead their
respective groups. Edwards played a pivotal role in bringing NetWare 3.x
to market and building the NetWare Systems Group. Newman was instrumental
in building Novell's customer service and support infrastructure and has
led software development at Novell during a time in which we have
significantly expanded the range of network services."
As executive vice president and general manager of the NetWare Systems
Group, Newman is responsible for product development and marketing of
NetWare operating systems and associated network services.
"The results of Novell's customer-driven expectations can be seen in the
numerous network services products we are bringing to market this year,"
said Newman. "NSG is delivering more powerful, more capable, yet easier
to use network systems products. With our valued industry partnerships,
development work underway in network operating systems, new network
services and peer-to-peer products, I believe NSG is better positioned
than ever to fulfill Novell's mission of accelerating the growth of the
network computing industry."
As executive vice president and general manager of the Desktop Systems
Group, Edwards has assumed responsibilities for Novell's fastest growing
product group, the developer of DR DOS operating system products.
Novell's expanding emphasis on desktop, or network client, operating
system products is centered within DSG.
"DSG forms the core of a major new business Novell intends to build around
responding to customer needs for client operating system software that
streamlines the delivery of applications across computer networks," said
Edwards. "Combining the resources of Novell with the talent and
perspective of the people at our development center in the UK, and in
Monterey, offers DSG the opportunity to significantly complement Novell's
network services in responding to customer needs for network aware desktop
environments."
As vice president of software development, Newman has been responsible for
the development of NetWare network operating system products and related
software. He has championed a customer-driven approach to engineering as
part of a program to accelerate the development and delivery to market of
more products that are simpler to use, yet expand customer choices for
network computing capabilities. Prior to this position he was vice
president service and support. He built Novell's service partnerships
with other vendors to launch the Technical Support Alliance multi-vendor
service program. Newman, who joined Novell in 1986, also served as
director of product testing, creating and defining Novell's testing
organization.
Edwards has held product marketing responsibilities for Novell's latest
generations of network operating system products since 1988. As vice
president product marketing NSG, Edwards has been responsible for product
development and marketing for all of Novell's network operating system
products, NetWare 3.11, NetWare 2.2 and NetWare Lite. Before assuming
this position, he was product line manager for NetWare 3.x, taking
Novell's integration platform for business-wide network computing from
initial market introduction in 1989 to its success in accounting for
approximately half of Novell's revenues.
Novell is organized around three business groups responsible for product
development and marketing, with executives reporting to Raymond J. Noorda:
NetWare Systems Group, Interoperability Systems Group and Desktop Systems
Group. In addition, the three product groups are provided centralized
services, including sales and support, by the Corporate Services Group.
Novell, Inc. employs more than 3,100 people worldwide. Novell is an
operating system software company and the developer of network services,
specialized and general purpose operating system software products,
including NetWare and DR DOS. Novell's NetWare network computing products
manage and control the sharing of services, data and applications among
computer workgroups, departmental networks and across business-wide
information systems.
